How to Maintain Motivation!

I talk a lot about the importance of feeling confident and comfortable. That is because I believe all of us are striving to feel these two emotions on a stable, daily basis. Haven't you gone a day where you feel confident in all the choices you make? You're having a good hair day, your outfit is killing it, and you notice this confidence is flooding over into your food choices, work decisions, and relationships.

What motivates you?

You should feel confident in your choices. You can have this feeling of comfort, confidence, and overall happiness on a daily basis. That isn't to say you won't have a day here and there that isn't clicking, but overall the majority of your days are positive.

Finding your inner motivation.

In order to feel confident in your choices, you need to know what your choices are.

Here is a simple practice that will help you to clarify your goals and a plan for success!

Step 1. Think about the most important health goal you have.

It could be related to a diagnosis, symptom, weight, feeling, etc. This is your personal goal so there is no right or wrong answer.

Step 2. Take it a step further and ask yourself, "Why?"

Why do you want to achieve this goal? Why is this the most important goal to you?

Whether you want to feel healthier, eliminate symptoms, or improve your self confidence - our true motivation - to reach a goal runs deep.

What I mean by that is we have an inner motivation that we often don't even realize. You may think, "If I can just lose that last ten pounds I will reach my goal and be happy."

Unfortunately, that is not the end of the journey. Your happiness is not dependent on a number on the scale. I am not saying that our happiness isn't affected by our weight, because that is a very true fact for most of us. However, your weight is not going to be the solution to your happiness.

This is why I recommend this practice of finding your inner motivation as we work on diet and lifestyle changes. Working on your physical appearance is great! But we cannot forget to also work on our mental and emotional health. This is where our true happiness and motivation lies.

So, how do we find true happiness and motivation?

We all want to feel a certain way about ourselves. It is a fact the number on a scale, lab values, diagnosis, and outward appearance all play a role in how we feel about ourselves. Those numbers do have important meaning for our health and you should want to improve your health; but it is important we also understand those numbers are not everything. In order to be successful and find our true motivation, we first need to gain a full understanding of our body and health. How will you ever find the perfect diet or lifestyle for your body if you do not pay attention to what your body is telling you? Symptoms like weight gain, bloating, fatigue, insomnia, acne, heartburn, pain, anxiety...are all ways our body communicates an issue. This is why I always make sure that the women I work with are not only learning about food and nutrition, but learning how to listen and care for their bodies.
