Estrogen plays a crucial role in women's health, influencing every system in a woman's body from her brain to her skin, liver, and so much more.

This is why changes in estrogen levels can cause a wide range of symptoms and health effects, especially during phases like PMS, perimenopause, postpartum, and in hormonal conditions such as PCOS and endometriosis.

In this article you'll learn how estrogen works in the body, why these changes happen, and how you can best support healthy estrogen balance.

What Are Estrogen Receptors and Where Are They Found?

Estrogen receptors (ERs) are proteins that act like docking stations for estrogen molecules. When estrogen binds to these receptors, it triggers specific responses in the cells, influencing how tissues grow, function, and repair. Estrogen receptors are found all throughout a womoan's body.

Key Areas with Estrogen Receptors

  • Reproductive Tract and Breasts: These areas have the highest concentration of estrogen receptors. Estrogen regulates menstrual cycles, fertility, breast development, and tissue maintenance.

  • Brain: Estrogen receptors in the brain influence mood, cognition, memory, and pain perception.

  • Bones: Estrogen helps maintain bone density by regulating bone remodeling, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

  • Cardiovascular System: Estrogen supports healthy blood vessels, influencing cholesterol levels and protecting against heart disease.

  • Liver: Estrogen affects metabolism, including how the body processes fats and sugars.

  • Skin: Estrogen contributes to skin thickness, elasticity, and hydration.

The widespread presence of estrogen receptors explains why changes in estrogen levels can impact so many different aspects of health, and cause so many symptoms when out of balance.

Estrogen Imbalance Symptoms and Conditions

Both low and high estrogen levels can cause symptoms that impact quality of life. Recognizing how estrogen works and the role of its receptors helps women understand their bodies better and seek appropriate care when needed.

From your brain to your gut, skin, bones, and even your bladder… estrogen receptors are everywhere. Which means when estrogen shifts (too high in estrogen dominance or too low in estrogen deficiency), your entire body feels it. Here's what that can look like:

When Estrogen is Low (common before your period, postpartum, or perimenopause):

  • Brain fog + low mood

  • Dry skin or vaginal dryness

  • Low energy + poor recovery

  • Joint aches

  • Sleep disruptions

When Estrogen is High (often seen with poor detox, stress, or imbalances):

  • Bloating + fluid retention

  • Breast tenderness

  • Mood swings / irritability

  • Heavy or painful periods

  • Headaches

Common Female Conditions and Estrogen's Role

Estrogen imbalance symptoms overlap with many conditions, so it is important to work with a provider that you trust and can help you navigate this healing journey. Educating my clients on their cycle and hormone fluctuations as we age is is a top priority of mine.

  • PMS and PMDD: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) involve cyclical changes in estrogen and progesterone. Fluctuations in estrogen receptor activity in the brain affect neurotransmitters like serotonin, leading to mood and behavioral symptoms.

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Women with PCOS often have irregular estrogen and progesterone levels, leading to symptoms like irregular periods and weight gain.

  • Endometriosis: Excess estrogen can stimulate the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, causing pain and inflammation.

  • Birth Control: Some birth control methods can raise estrogen levels. They can also disrupt gut health and contribute to sluggish liver and detox pathways.

  • Perimenopause: During perimenopause, estrogen levels fluctuate unpredictably. This irregular signaling through estrogen receptors causes symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and cognitive changes.

  • Postpartum: After childbirth, the sudden drop in estrogen impacts brain receptors, contributing to postpartum mood disorders. Physical symptoms like vaginal dryness also result from low estrogen receptor activation in reproductive tissues.

Please note: If a woman starts birth control, it does affect her overall hormonal balance and can affect her body's ability to manage estrogen. You can learn more about birth control and IUD effects on hormone health in my article here.

How to Support Natural Estrogen Balance

  • Nutrition: Eating a balanced diet rich in fiber, healthy fats, and phytoestrogens (found in soy, flaxseeds) can support estrogen metabolism. A powerful food group that helps to support estrogen metabolism in the body are cruciferous vegetables. These include: broccoli, cauliflower, kale, radish, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. But my favorite high antioxidant cruciferous food is broccoli sprouts! I teach my clients how to make these!

  • Exercise: Regular physical activity helps regulate hormones and maintain healthy body weight.

  • Stress Management: Chronic stress affects hormone balance; practices like meditation and yoga can help.

  • Provider Support: For significant symptoms, I recommend a comprehensive hormone panel to get deep insight into your body's production and metabolism of hormones along with inflammatory markers, organic acids (nutrients), and toxin load. You can learn more about the hormone testing panel I use here.

Taking Control of Your Hormonal Health

You can take proactive steps to manage your hormonal health. Nutrition, lifestyle changes, and stress management are key components. By focusing on these areas, you can help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with IUDs.

Navigating all of this can be challenging, especially if you lead a busy life. This is why I created my Foundations of Hormone Balance Method to guide women through realistic changes they can make to their diet, lifestyle, supplement routine, and daily habits.
